ECTOIN
The molecule RESET/01 is built around.
Ectoin is an extremolyte. It is the reason this system exists, and the reason it is a recovery system rather than another set of actives.
A graphic device, not a molecular diagram. It illustrates one behaviour — water organised around a core — and nothing more.
01Definition
ECTOINWhat it is
Ectoin is a small, water-loving molecule first identified in micro-organisms living in extreme environments — salt flats, hot springs, high-UV desert crusts. Places where staying hydrated is the whole problem.
Organisms in those conditions accumulate compounds called extremolytes to stay stable. Ectoin is one of them. It works by binding and organising water molecules around itself, forming a hydrated shell.
It is produced for cosmetic use by biotechnological fermentation — no extreme environment is harvested to make it.
A molecule whose entire function is holding on to water.
02Selection
Why NOKOÏ chose it
We did not start from a molecule. We started from a problem: routines that had become too demanding for the skin carrying them.
That problem needed an active that adds stability rather than activity. Something that supports hydration and comfort without asking the skin to do more work, and that behaves well alongside everything else in a modern routine.
Ectoin is well tolerated, water-soluble, stable across a wide pH range, and it does not compete with the actives people already use. It is the rare ingredient that improves a routine by making it calmer.
Tolerance
Comfortable in leave-on formats, including around the eyes.
Compatibility
Stable across a broad pH range and easy to formulate beside other actives.
Function
Supports hydration and skin comfort — a recovery role, not an exfoliating one.
Sourcing
Produced by fermentation, at cosmetic-grade consistency.
03Rationale
Why recovery matters
The skin barrier is a physical structure: layers of corneocytes held in a lipid matrix. Its job is to keep water in and irritants out.
When that structure is disrupted — by over-exfoliation, stacked actives, cold air, low humidity, long flights, not enough sleep — water leaves faster than it is replaced. Skin reads as tight, rough, reactive and dull.
Recovery is what closes that gap. Supporting hydration and barrier function is not a gentler alternative to active skincare; it is the condition that lets active skincare work without cost.
The overload loop
- 01
Overload
Actives stack faster than the barrier can recover.
- 02
Compromise
Water loss rises. Skin feels tight and reacts to things it used to tolerate.
- 03
Correction
More product is added to fix the discomfort, which extends the overload.
- 04
Reset
The loop breaks when recovery becomes the priority instead of the afterthought.
04In the system
How it works with the rest
Ectoin appears in all five steps. What changes is what it is asked to work alongside.

LIP
In a lipid stick with peptides, for skin that has no barrier to spare.
The supporting cast
PDRN
Conditioning support
A nucleotide-based cosmetic active used to support the look of well-conditioned, comfortable skin.
Beta-Glucan
Soothing hydration
A large polysaccharide that holds water at the surface and leaves skin feeling calm and cushioned.
Panthenol
Comfort
Provitamin B5. One of the most established comforting humectants in cosmetic formulation.
Ceramides & Lipids
Barrier lipids
Lipids from the same families found in the skin barrier, included to support how that barrier feels.
Peptides
Smoothness & cushion
Short amino-acid chains used in cosmetics to support the appearance of smooth, cushioned skin.
What we are not claiming
What we are not claiming
Ectoin is a well-characterised cosmetic ingredient, not a miracle molecule. NOKOÏ is a recovery brand that uses it — not an Ectoin brand.
We publish no percentages, no clinical results and no efficacy studies of our own, because we have not run any. When we do, we will publish the method alongside the number.
Cosmetic products support the appearance, hydration and comfort of skin. They do not treat, cure or prevent medical conditions. If your skin is painful, broken or persistently inflamed, that is a conversation for a healthcare professional, not a skincare brand.
